University Students unanimously reject PSNI

11th January 2002, Belfast Telegraph

STUDENTS attending the University General Meeting (UGM) at the University of Ulster at Coleraine have unanimously rejected the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The UGM - held annually at each of the campuses - gives students the opportunity to contribute to Student Union policy and create its mandate for the coming year.

A wide range of issues are discussed, including provision of education and welfare services. However, students are allowed to table motions, provided at least 15 signatures are supplied supporting them.

It emerged that more than 150 students attending the recent UGM at the North West campus unanimously rejected the new PSNI because of alleged RUC human rights abuses in the past.

University of Ulster Student Union president, Colum Delaney, stressed the motion was "student driven".

However, student representatives in the area, he said, will continue to work with the new police service on various community initiatives and groups.

He also said that the rejection could only be taken as a "snapshot" of opinion among the students.

"Those who attended the meeting are merely a snapshot of the wider population," he said.

"I do not wish to pre-empt what others are thinking but those who participated on the night were very adamant that it was their belief they should not endorse the new police service."

A spokesman for the PSNI urged all people, including students, to support the new service.

He added: "The PSNI was set up as a result of the Patten Report to establish community-based policing for Northern Ireland which is representative of all its citizens.

"The only way to bring real change is for all sections of the community to support the service and get involved in policing through political representatives on the Policing Board and achieve the goal of a service that provides community safety for all."
