Angel's Baby Is Due...

At long last, the mystery is finally solved, Angel's baby is ... you didn't really fall for that did you?

At the end of last season, when "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" moved to UPN, leaving its spin-off "Angel" to fare for itself on The WB, network executives asked the question: Can "Angel" survive independently of "Buffy" ?

The answer is clearly yes -- although some fans may be sad given that the separation will seemingly end the Buffy and Angel love affair for once and for all.In "Lullaby," airing Monday, Nov. 19 at 9 p.m., "Angel" takes a move similar to one made on last season's "The X-Files," shifting from pondering the purpose of Angel's soul to debating whether his baby should have one. A few episodes back, Darla (Julie Benz) returned to Angel's life with a little bun in the tummy. Yes, the famously evil vampire was pregnant, but the how and why were a mystery not only to the show's fans but to Darla herself.

You see, vampires aren't supposed to be able to carry children, because they're dead, right? After a little research, Angel's own Scooby gang come across a scroll that prophesizes about a miraculous child -- or does it? On their heels is vampire hunter Holtz, transported by a mysterious demon from the 18th century to take his revenge upon Angelus and Darla for murdering his wife and two young children. It's unlikely that Angel has ever faced such as deadly foe, made all the more powerful by Angel's immense guilt over his past action.

I can't say that all the questions the show has raised are answered at the end of this episode (how very "X-Files" of them!), but I can tell you that the episode is amazing and highlighted by the spectacular birth of Angel's son.It seems the child has the ability to stir powerful emotions in Darla and in the episode Benz gives her finest performance thus far, adding depth to Darla's quandary regarding the baby. Boreanaz is also particularly good, clearly conflicted about the prospect of having a child, not only because it's with a woman he doesn't love but also because the child may bring on the destruction of the world. Keith Szarabajka ("Profit"), who is excellent as Holtz, adds a poignancy to the episode, clearly illustrating the change Angel has undergone since being cursed with a soul.

The addition of Angel's baby promises to take the series in a whole new direction, and while it may not lead back to "Buffy," "Angel's" plight can only get more interesting from this point on.

--Thoughts??
