Wow, what a great review! It sounds as if the episode is going to be kick ass. Julie Benz has come a long way from her portrayal of Darla in S1 of BtVS; admittedly, she wasn't really given the sort of material she could shine with back then. For example, she wasn't permitted to show true caring for anyone, not even Angel.

I presume the "powerful emotions" stirred up are a mix of maternal feelings and resistance (not actual repugnance). I never saw the character of Darla as particularly maternal, and not only because of the fact that she's a vampire. (I can far more easily see Dru as being maternal). I'm guessing that we'll see her struggle with the concept of being a mother and a mother to a human at that. Still, she'll be a tiger against Holtz, Wolfram and Hart and anyone else who might seek to harm him. And the depth of this protectiveness will startle her somewhat.

This would all be fine - no, great! - with me. But I don't want it to serve as a set-up as Darla changing into a quasi-human in terms of her mindset. I can see her caring for a couple of humans, but that should be about it.

Anyway, compared to the arcs on BtVS, this sounds like a kick ass one. Let it commence!
