Don't connect a CD Rom or other device (except another HDD) to the primary controller cable. Keep your HDD(s) on the primary controller cable and CD Rom(s) on the secondary controller cable. The reason is because when the Bios sees multiple devices on one controller, it sets the speed for the slower of the devices, thus slowing your HDD access times if it is on the same cable with a CD Rom. The same goes for attaching HDDs with different speeds on the same cable.
