I just didn’t buy it. But he kept assuring me they would so finally I said well what are their names, what do they look like, let ME find THEM.
That will be easier. He told me to look for Perry or
Vic, both BIG guys, hard to miss. Then he got
positioned somewhere else and Brian walked me back
over to near where the stage was and I sat at a table
while him and his friend left. By then it was about
4:30 and I kept watching to see if people were being
let in yet, since I didn’t want to leave and go back
in line, thinking I might see the Goos back where I
was. Brian eventually came back and sat and talked
with me for a while, and was telling me he could get
me into the Vegas show (I’m 19 so I couldn’t go), and
not only that but could arrange to have a private
plane pick me up. I was like you’re joking right.
But we were talking for a while, and I think he’s
actually legit. I was pretty skeptical that he could
arrange something of that scale in so short a time
(the Vegas show was the next night) and I was right.
But he says he works a lot of shows and knows a lot of
people, so I might get to actually be flown to some
pretty cool shows (not Goo though). We’ll see how
that goes. I talked to him much later that night on
the phone and asked him why he was doing this for me,
and what the catch was. He said no catch, he just
thought it would be so cool to surprise me with a trip
to see them in Vegas. He was really cool though, and
was really apologetic when he finally admitted he
couldn’t pull it off in time, because he couldn’t get
ahold of one of his friends in Vegas. Anyways! I finally saw people start to come in and
run up to the stage. I bolted in from backstage and
got the best spot in the house, front row! Finally
the Goos came on and put on the most amazing show. Johnny grabbed my hand twice during the show, and gave me a guitar pic after I held up a sign asking for one.
I was so excited that security didn’t care that I was
taking pictures. Robby and John both smiled at me a
lot. I was wearing a bright red wife beater style
tank top with a big sparkly star in the center of the
chest. I think it got their attention. So my
fourth Goo concert ended, and in my opinion the best
of the four. As soon as the show ended I asked the
security guard in front of me if I could have their
set list, but he said he wasn’t allowed to take it
down or something. So then I asked him if he knew Perry or Vic, the guys that Aaron had told me to look for after the show. He was like, “Vic? Yeah he’s right behind you.” I turned around and saw this big guy who looked like one of the HEADS of security. He had on a special-looking black jacket instead of a red one which all the other security guards wore. I asked him if he knew Aaron and that Aaron had told me to find him after the show because he might be able to help me meet the Goo Goo Dolls. He was like, “Oh, are you the one who’s been here all day?” My first reaction was oh my gosh Aaron actually kept his word and hooked me up! Vic said he thought it might be possible and told me to wait right there by the stage. He went to work clearing the place out. Five minutes later another security guard came up to me and said I had to leave, and I told him Vic told me to wait here.
He went and talked to Vic, and they had their backs
to me, then Vic turned around and shone his flashlight
at me, and they turned their backs to me again and
then went their separate ways. The one security guard
came back in my direction and smiled and gave me a
thumbs up. I was like holy shit he’s really gonna
take me backstage! So I waited around, and waited,
and waited. After about 15 minutes I noticed Mike
come out by the side of the stage! I went up to him
and said hi, and shook his hand and he took a picture with me and autographed my ticket stub. I asked him if there was any chance he could take me back to meet John and Robby, and he said he thought Robby already left, and he’d tell John that I was out there and to come say hi. So I waited around some more. I didn’t think Johnny would actually come out, or that Mike would even tell him for that matter, and I was right.
But in the mean time, I was hanging around near the
stage and one of the roadies handed me one of their
set lists, and I made friends with another security
guard who gave me this sheet that said the breakdown
of the crew’s day (even including curfew!) and said
“Return to the Hotel. Tomorrow we depart really
stupid early (5:30am) for the Airport,” and a woman
named Brigit who had worked at the show but was a big
Goo fan like me. She said she saw me during the show,
and saw Johnny grab my hand and was telling me how
happy I looked, lol. We chatted for a while, and I
was telling her about the guy I had seen on the plane
and how I found out he was Robby’s bass guitar tech,
and was kicking myself for never talking to him on the
plane. Well just then I saw him talking to some girl,
a little ways away from me. Brigit and I walked up to
him, and I waited til he was done talking to the girl,
then I said, “Hey, you were on my flight!” He was
like, “Yeah! You were the girl with the striped
sweater!” He totally remembered me! We chatted for a
little bit, and he told us the hotel they were all
staying at. I asked if he was just working with the
Goos for this show or if he’d be touring with them for
the Gutterflowers tour. He’ll be on the road with
them come April! Then he was like, “Hey let me give
you my number,” and asked if I had a pen. Wow! So I
have his cell phone number. I tried calling him two
days later, but he didn’t answer so I left a
voicemail…we’ll see if he calls me back. I asked him
at the show if he could take me backstage, and he said
he thought they’d already left. So we said goodbye,
and after he left Brigit was like, “Should we do
it??!!” And we both looked at each other and grinned
and shouted, “Yeah!” So she drove us to the first
hotel we came to and I jumped out and asked the front
desk for directions to the Resort Suites, the hotel
they were staying at. We headed over there, and
checked the bar, but no luck. We didn’t know what to
do, but then I realized Brian was staying at the same
hotel (he’d given me his room number along with his
phone number) so we decided we’d go to his room and
chat then try back at the bar in a little bit, seeing
as we had no clue which room the Goos were in, not
even which BUILDING (the hotel was made up of about 15
different buildings). So we drove over to where Brian
was staying, but he wasn’t there. Got back in the car
and Brigit said I should try calling the guy I saw on
the plane (I’m leaving out his name on purpose), so I
did, but I just got his voicemail. So we started just
driving back to the main lobby entrance, when we
spotted some people walking to their room. We slowed
down because I had thought one of them was the plane
guy. But then we noticed that it was the Goo Goo
Dolls! We only saw their backs, but Robby’s red hair
was unmistakable even in the dark. So we started
freaking out and Brigit parked the car in the nearest
spot (even thought it was like “Staff Only” or
something like that) and watched them go into a room,
then walked to the bottom of the stairs under their
room (they were on the second floor) and tried to
figure out what to do. We finally decided that we’d
knock on the door and say we were trying to get ahold
of [plane guy] and saw them and figured he might be
with them, and we did try calling him but his
voicemail picked up. We went up to their door, and
couldn’t bring ourselves to knock, and were still kind
of doubtful that it was actually them behind that
door. So we just listened for a little bit then
suddenly heard Johnny’s voice loud and clear right
behind the door. I almost died right there. So then
Brigit knocked, and the door opened and standing right
there was John and Robby. I was so stunned. But I
had to keep it together otherwise I knew I’d look
really stupid. So we went through with our plane guy
story and before we could say we tried calling him,
Johnny asked if we had. I said yeah but I only got
his voicemail. He was like, “Oh, figures.” They
talked to us for a few minutes in the doorway, and I lifted up my sweatshirt and showed them my red shirt with the star, and they said, “Yeah, we were talkin’ about you backstage. We were like, we’ve seen her before.” (Aaahhh!! They recognized me!) That’s when I asked John if he remembered the wig (another story…I think a lot of you have heard it…in a sentence, I took this crazy white sparkly punk rock wig to two shows and he wore it on stage at both). He was like, “My wig or your wig?” It took him a minute to remember but he eventually did and said they still have it in their practice room, and that it’s a pretty cool wig.
Then Johnny said they were going to smoke, and said I was too young to, and asked how old I was. I said 19, and he didn’t believe me at first (I asked how old he thought I was and he said 16), and asked Brigit how old she was and she said 37 and he didn’t believe her either but she took out her license and showed him.
