Morning Sherry.
First of all your grandson is very lucky to have a grandmother like you who cares for him.

If your grandson can use a computer there are things that can help him.

The piece of software you can download called natural reader you can get a free version of this overview on you can buy the full version I use the free version. If you highlight any text on your computer it will really to you making life a bit easier those people like me that have problems.

The other piece of software that your grandson can use is NaturallySpeaking Dragon 11.5 version is the only one I would recommend. This will let your grandson communicate with the rest of the world with ease. He can dictate his e-mails or letters in the spelling will be correct. The before he sends his e-mail or letters about all get the natural reader to read it back to him first that way he will know if it sounds correct and can make some adjustments if he needs to.

There is a computer program that you can use to start learning to read and spell you need to be connected to the Internet to use this program. It is really to help children to read and write. You have to start somewhere. Unfortunately you have to pay for this program you can get a lifetime deal it is not that expensive and it will help you read and spell you need to do the programme every few days start at the beginning keep on going sometimes it will ask you to go backwards and start again don't be disappointed at this does do it in get you to listen to the phonics of the words eventually it will help. The program is called www.ClickN KIDS.com
I know these programs work because I have used all of them and I still use them today.
Unfortunately this will not teach you grammar I do not know the program that does but I do know if you use Microsoft Word and dictate a letter if the grammar is not right you will get squiggly lines underneath what you have written if you click answer the squiggly line it will give you a suggestion to replace what you have said. So it could be a bit of trial and error that is the only thing I can suggest to you.
I hope you find this useful.

I understand being failed by the school system. When it came to first grade, I wasn't learning how to read or write AT ALL with the method they were teaching and the school did absolutely nothing to stop me from falling through the cracks. So my grandmother, who was a first and second grade teacher, retired and went back to college in order to learn how to teach phonex to a dyslexic. Its because of my grandmother I can read now. So God Bless loving grandmothers!

The school system completely ignores learning styles and only teaches one standard style (auditory), the excelling honor role "A" students are those who happen to have that at as their learning style. And there's a good reason why its always only a certain portion of the student population excelling, and it has nothing to do with them being "smarter" or having better work ethics.

People who have language Dyslexia or Dyscalculia (math dysexlia) are usually "Visual-Spatial Learners." A program that helped me after I started to be re-homeschooled for the 8th grade on was a website called Brainpop which teaches everything by video. Its was excellent for me.

Your grandson will eventually have to take a GED, which is equivalent to a high-school diploma (My grandma doesn't know much about GEDs which is why I mentioning it, in case you don't know). I've done a course called gedprep.com on the internet-- but honestly I don't recommend it. It explains everything too quickly, and even though its in video format most of the info is presented auditory/lecture style. I'll post once I find a better GED preparation study guide for Dyslexics.
