My 26 year old son is having a tough time out in the world. He has such a hard time to find a boss that understands his dyslexia. Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of job he needs to look for. He is incredibly smart but has a problem remembering everything he is suppose to do. He is a very hard worker. Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated.

Hello,

I am 25 and am moderatly dyslexic.

My main advice would be for him to follow your heart in terms of what his specific interest is. A benefit of dyslexia noted in some resources i have read is a specific drive on interest which others don't have. Non dyslexics have much more choice and can find a pathway harder to choose in terms of employment.

Dylexics are more likely to enjoy creative or people jobs as some are very caring due to the impact of their early childhood of needing support.

When he gets a job, ensure he writes a lot down, has a good diary and so can do this. I state, 'hang on i need to write this down'. If i get a strange expression i say i am sorry, i am dyslexic so need to help myself with my memory.

Tell his management newly on into starting a post. He just needs to drop it into conversation. He will be suprised at how supportive they will be as this is required under law. This is much better than the feeling of frustration by your manager further down the line in terms of your performance as you never told them.

After intial hiccups he will thrive when new tasks he learns move from his short term into his long term memory. This will help him gain confidence when he realises his skill.

Confidence can also come from knowing that without dyslexia his life may be different, he may not have any drive or interest and not help others around him. This may be in a creative or helping sense to others around.

Erica.
