It is extremely important to boycott the olympics, we should not watch them, we should protest them when possible. The problem with boycotting china is that even if they stopped their human rights violations in tibet and sudan, can we recommend that people resume buying product that poison them? China is probably the greatest threat to the world today, although it is not in the limited political and military way we view most threats, it also includes economic, health, and environmental threats. It is extremely hard to completely boycott china, but it is very easy to reduce our consumption of chinese products, just like it is easy to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels. There are many cheap products that are produced in other developing countries, like india, before we resort to buying a chinese made product we should check other stores and sources and make sure there is no alternative. Sometimes you will even find comptetive products that are USA made, i recently found a wagon for my kids that was actually made in america by a company called USA plastics, radio flyer outsourced it's production to china. I also try to limit what i buy from china even if i have no other options. I will not stock up on products from china like i normally do if i find something on sale. Even a 10 - 20% reduction in sales of chinese products will have a big impact on trade and the chinese economy, it will show business that there is a demand for products produced elsewhere, and it will serve as a warning to china. >With the human rights abuses that continue in China >against the Tibetans and anyone who speaks out against >the regime, should western societies participate in >the summer olympics this year? > >My personal opinion is that while it would certainly >disappoint the athletes, it would also drive home to >China's "government" that they cannot continue to >torture and imprison people for simply speaking their >minds. > >The latest protests have brought to mind the days when >South Africa was banned from even attending the Games >due to their policies of Apartheid and the political >imprisonment of people like Nelson Mandella [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
