's message, "Re: Bush is to busy selling off America" on 21:32:06 08/22/07 Wed I dought this carbon offsetting scheme works, 6 dollars a ton seems way to cheap, if it were that simple and cheap there would be no objection from big business, an average american would only need 120 dollars to offset their 20 ton co2 per year output. The arctic sea ice collapse continues, the loss is quite staggering, as of readings published 8/23/07, we have beaten the previous record lows for arctic sea ice coverage and extent by 16% and 6%, with at least 2 - 3 weeks of melting left. It is likely that sea ice coverage will decline by at least 40% this year, the old record was 22%, and extent will likely decline by at least 30%, perhaps approaching 40%. The loss in area comes out to about 400,000 square miles for both coverage and extent compared to previous records, with the overall decline being around a million square miles less then the average of the years 1979 - 2000. The loss of ice this year is not merely a very rapid loss, it is more like a collapse, scientists are already pushing up the predicted date for the complete loss of the arctic ice cap to around 2030, and that may be too optomistic, it seems like it may be less than a decade. Where the ice has melted, the water temperatures rapidly rise at least 10 degrees above the old normal, which was freezing, which greatly accelerates the melting and makes recovery much harder in the freezing season. As the ice cap is lost and water temps rise rapidly, this greatly increases the chances of positive feedback like the melting of permafrost and the release of methane hydrates from the arctic region, which would greatly increase the catastrophic warming of the earth. Bush and american capitalism will be completely discredited by the collapse of the modern climate caused by our economy, in a few decades or sooner the world will recognize the failure of capitalism to be as great as the failures of communism and fascism. The great mistake of capitalists was to claim global warming was some kind of socialist conspiracy, instead of taking responsability for their actions and working to solve the pollution problems that our economy causes. While the catastrophes of communism and fascism were limited to the societies that were under there rule, the catastrophe of capitalism will affect the whole world for at least thousands of years. > > >Voluntary 'Carbon Offsetting' as Strategy for >Privatizing America's Public Lands - CommonDreams.org > >href="http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/08/22/33 >29/">http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/08/22/332 >9/ [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
