Subject: I’ve helped run a feis for many years. Here’s what we do:

Championships of 4 or less - place everyone.

Championships of 5 or more - place 50%, rounding up if an odd number of competitors (i.e. top 3 out of 5, 4 out of 7, etc.)

We make an exception and place everyone if ties would result in a single dancer not being awarded (i.e 3-way tie for 3rd in a competition of 6).

We also make exceptions for very tight results (i.e we’d place all 5 in an open championship of 5 dancers if Irish points between 3rd and 5th are very close.) We also announce at results that the points are extremely close so the dancers at the bottom feel good about their placements.

  • Attended a feis that did this. Dancer had a fault, was last in the comp. Announcer gleefully announced, "in such and such place is-" and dancer went up in tears, it was rubbing in the error. Asked the committee and was told the announcer always announces all places because he loves doing his "job" as announcer. Dancer humiliated nonetheless.
