Subject: Stanford prison experiment - two views
In reply to: Nick T. 's message, "short post about brainwashing and manipulation" on 15:08:38 05/27/04 Thu

Here are two opposing views about whether the Stanford prison experiment is applicable to Iraq prison torture.

It's not bad apples, it's the barrel (interview with Prof. Zimbardo)

The Stanford Prison Experiment doesn't explain Abu Ghraib

In these two articles, we recognize the typical arguments again: A mind control situation in which people "automatically" do such things vs. free will or personal responsibiliy.

I think this example shows pretty well how two concepts or phenomena which both are true are "played off" against each other.

The Stanford prison experiment explains Abu Ghraib very well. However, the wrong inference was made that this would excuse these deeds. But this is not the case.

We all know that certain environments tend to make people aggressive and evil, while other environments tend to make people behave nice and friendly. But this does not mean that the behavior of people is completely determined by their environment, and they bear no responsibility for their deeds. No, God will surely hold people accountable for their sind - but I firmly believe that God will also take account for the environment in which the people live and raised up and how they have been manipulated.
