Dear Andrew,

it just so happened to be that you were quite similar to me in your experience.
What differentiates us was that when I came to UBF, I came from a very vivid, burning Christian group (which I had to leave due to relocating to another country). I knew the Bible a bit, I was baptized, I genuinely wanted to be a proper Christian. So, I had no gf, didn't drink alcohol or any other controlling substance, was willing to do whatever sounded plausible, yet I was totally rebellious whenever I saw "the Truth" compromized, i.e. my biblical understanding at that time.
And they'd let me at that.
Yet, I did get gentle (really, I mean it) remarks when I was doing something which was against the UBF program, i.e. go out for sports on Sundays or come to SWS in shorts+T-Shirt (after being a Shepherd!).
My testimony (due to my own laziness I admit it) is only available in German yet, but you'd find that I have the same judgment about "my shepherd" at that time: I believe him to be honest and sincere, I believe that he acted out of virtuous love and genuine compassion etc.

But let me say that UBF is quite aware that those who are "so rebellious" will at one point usually leave. At that time, it's better if they are UBF's friends, unable to clearly discern what is going on "behind the scenes" but rather with the rose-garden picture that "all is well in UBF".
That was one of the first things that came to my mind when I was making up my mind about UBF: "If the UBF HAS a darkside, how come I never saw it, with all my critical probing?" Well... simple, because they don't show it to those who "are not ready yet".
Yet, if you read the apologetics of people like this JC30something... you will find out that all this deception IS going on behind the scenes, they consider this to be totally normal, and consider even "lovebombing" as Chris called it, to be a valid method of discipleship.
And they'll lovebomb you until you are ready to eat everything at face value: and with you and me, that never happened.

In Christ,
Mike K.
