When I was in the LA UBF there was an attempt made by some students to contemporize the Sunday service. There was guitar, drums and a couple of students led the audience in modern Christian songs. But the UBF missionaries didn’t really like it and they went back to the old stodgy, dull “Hymn 11” routine after some of these students left.

I think the missionaries have a certain idea how a Sunday service is "right." Namely, when it is exactly like the one in Chicago and the one they had in Korea when they were young, fresh believers and in their "honeymoon phase" with God. This is not a particular problem of UBF. In many churches they believe the liturgy of the church where they have grown up is the only real "spiritual" one and people feel very uneasy if something is different from the way they are accustomed to. So the missionaries like to have everything very traditional in the sense of UBF. On the other side, the missionaries know that students and 2nd gens like contemporary music and worship sessions.

So the chapter leaders have to trade off two of their goals against each other: Winning young members vs. keeping the tradition. Usually, they resolve it with a compromize. In our chapter, we had a short contemporary praise session in the beginning, then a big rupture and the rest of the very long worship service in traditional UBF style.

I noticed that UBF chapters in America seem to be more against contemporary music as in Europe. But since the 2nd generation has become their only hope, I believe the UBF in America will also make concessions and allow "worship&praise sessions" in the future because they know that these kind of emotional experiences are very important to make UBF attractive to 2nd gens.
