I wanted to bring to light the fact that, at least in my chapter, UBF members were banned from listening to secular or modern music. Basically, the only music that was appropriate to listen to were hymns and classical music. Contemporary Christian music was a no-go. Any other kind of modern music was frowned upon. One time the chapter director remarked that he heard his daughter singing a popular tune from the radio. He was "astonished" and publicly rebuked her for it.
Coming into UBF, I was a devoted listener of heavy metal music. After about a year in UBF, I felt that I shouldn't listen to that kind of music any more. Divorcing myself from music was very painful. Since leaving UBF, I have returned to heavy metal, although I stay with bands with a positive message (eg. King's X, Galactic Cowboys, Atomic Opera).
UBF's ban on modern music reminds me of the fanaticism of some extreme fundamentalist Christian groups. It has no scriptural basis whatever.
