If you are a college student, try talking to a campus minister. After UBF, I tried attending churches of several different denominations and didn't really connect with anyone there. Then, I decided to go to talk to some of the campus ministers at the university. The Methodist chaplain's door happened to be open. I walked in, introduced myself. I said I was looking for a place to plug in after having a bad experience with a campus "fellowship." She asked, what was it that made it a bad experience. I explained to her that I had been in a totalist group. She said, "I know about UBF. Actually, we had a psychologist come in to talk to our congregation about cults."

A year later, I became a member of the United Methodist church affiliated with the university. My experience there has been so totally opposite to my experience in UBF. There I experience genuine Christianity. The only thing that bothers me is the overlap between the Methodist hymnal and the UBF (Nazarene) hymnal.

So Robert, don't be afraid and take your time. As you feel comfortable, seek out churches that you feel might be a match for you. See how people respond to you. You will eventually find the right place.

Lastly, don't miss out on Larry Pile's article on finding a healthy church after a cult experience:
