Hello Jim,

I am glad you found this web site and responded to it. After reading all of your posts it sounds like your experience with ubf is similair to the experience I had while I was there. I was in ubf for four years. After the first two years I thought everyone was a sincere, geniune, dedicated Christian. I thought that I was growing as a Christian and that if I stayed connected with this group I would grow into a man of God.

Basically, my impression after two years of attending ubf was that it is a good Christian enviroment. But then I began to see things within the fellowship that made me wonder if I was in the right place or not.

I would like to share them with you:

1. The director said "I have the authority to make you do these things" (speaking of writing testimonies, tithing, attending all meetings, where to live, who to marry ect....)

2. The director said "If you don't attend prayer meeting, you owe me ten dollars."

3. The director said "If you don't write testimonies you are not saved, and if you miss writing it for the week, then you have to stay after worship service and complete it."

4. Concerning a passage of scripture in Isaiah (about 8 verses long), we were told we had to memorize all of it before we could go home.

5. I was pressured into attending a daily 6:00am morning prayer meeting. Morning is the time of day we should give to God, not the church. Nonetheless, I was "persuaded" to attend when they said God would bless me for this. The truth is, God does not want us having any idols in our hearts, and if we run off to church every morning to attend a prayer meeting it could very well mean we love our church more than God.

6. I was asked to sell my house, and move closer to the university. I was told that having a house in the first place meant I was too materialistic, and that I should let God take control. I was told to find a place near the university and let one of the missionaries move in with me. I am sure to this day that if I had decided to follow the director's advice, he would have asked me to "donate" a large amount of money to ubf.

It is not right for a "pastor" to pressure someone to sell their house for the gain of the church.

7. I heard many times during my four years at ubf someone say something like "he ran away from ubf", or "he gave up". What they were really saying is that someone decided to go to another church; this indicates that ubf leaders believe that ubf is the only place where you can be a Christian. This is very dangerous, I could kick myself for staying there as long as I did.

8. I was not told the truth about the death of their founder Samual Lee. When Mr. Lee died, I was told his wife found him dead in the bathroom, and that he died in a peaceful way. But the truth turned out to be that there was a fire at Mr. Lee's house and his wife ran outside to go to a neighbors house to call 911. Mr Lee died from the smoke from the fire, the firemen found him dead inside his house. Why would the director of my ubf chapter lie about the way Mr. Lee died? I was lead to believe he died from natural causes, not from a fire. The director even said everyone should died this way. Obviously there are some problems here.

9. I was told that a woman in Korea was praying for me to be her husband. She belonged to a ubf chapter there. The truth is my director arranged it with another director in Korea; and, this practice is very common in ubf. They like to select your future spouse for you, so they can control you. I was told I needed to go to Korea as soon as possible and meet her.

10. I was told that ubf was my last chance to become a good Christian, that if I went anywhere else I would not have a chance.

The chapter that I attended was very small, and there were not "huge" problems like there are in other bigger chapters. Also, in a smaller chapter the problems may not show as much as they would in bigger ones. Therefore, these things I wrote about may seem small to you. But I recognized that ubf was telling me to do things only God should tell me; such as who to marry, where to live, and when to have devotions to God. We can never assume that our church and God are the same thing.

I am just trying to share my experiences with you so that if you decide to stay in ubf you will know what to expect. As you can see, I was not hurt by ubf as bad as some of the other people here, so if they seem to be harsh on ubf it is because they don't want to see you get hurt.

Sincerely
Bob
