Only a small percentage actually give significant amounts. Most students give only $5 or so.

They must be very "ungrateful" for the "grace received at the conference". Like I said, I was living from below $300 a month (GROSS income, i.e. deduct tax, rent and basic living expenses...) and I was suggested a $60 "thanksgiving offering" to properly express my "gratitude". And that was only for a minor local conference.
I doubt that for such a great event, $5 is appropriate.
