Hi everyone,
For a couple years I took some courses at Moody Bible Inst. and it helped me alot to see the complete mess that is the ubf mess that they call Bible study. There is a book by Dr. Howard Hendricks called "How to study the Bible on Your Own." It is a very well written, easy to understand guide to do Bible study in the right ways. Dr. Hendricks is a very prolific and successful author, and he is known as a very devoted and sincere Christian leader, I think he is one of the top leaders at Dallas Theological Seminary. He has been an author of Christian books and articles since 1951!
Anyway, 'How to study the Bible on your own' covers various methods and forms of studying the Bible. You can read through the whole book and you will notice that none of the methods in the book resemble the ubf method of Bible study. It is also obvious that if you study preaching, you will notice that nobody presents Bible messages in the manner that ubf does. ubf calls their method the 'conversational style of message delivery'. If you do a google search, you will not find anything called the conversational method except a very long article by Dr. Jim Rabchuk. Not surprising at all.
The ubf methods are totally out of line with the methods of reputable Christian groups. If the ubf method of Bible study is wrong, it seems safe to say that the ubf Bible materials and teachings are totally out of line. I wrote before about the eight rules of Bible interpretation, here is a link to them, please check them out.
I feel the ubf is so far out of line, so outside the normal rules, that I concluded that they are doing so on purpose. To protect yourself, always make sure that your Bible study and materials are abiding by the rules.
And as my final thought, ubf is outside all the normal rules of Bible study, but they are virtually identical with cults in terms of study, teaching and practices.
