Subject: I should say I actually agree with you that we should've stayed in Afghanistan, though I don't think it would have been a quick and easy rout.

Look at how hard a time the Russians had in Afghanistan...it was a major factor in the breakup of the Soviet Union. So I wouldn't count on it being a quick fix for us, either. Still, yes, that is what we should have dealt with first.

But we may well have had to deal with Saddam Hussein at some point down the line anyway.

A major question here is just to what extent we should be supporting Israel...in any question of America's involvement in the Middle East, it's like the elephant in the room that people don't want to talk about.

We've been thrust into this role as the world's big mama ever since World War II (and to some extent even before), and really by having to fill the vacuum as Europe was no longer able to take that role itself (and WWII demonstrated that somebody had to). I wish we could go back to when we could just deal with our own domestic troubles, but now I don't see how we can, at least not easily. I respect those who argue for isolationism, but without a better plan for how to do that without abandoning commitments and hurting ourselves as well as others in the process I cannot condemn those who argue against it either.

But I think, Mercedes, that you and I are showing some progress in discussing this more respectfully, and yes, that's something I have to work on as well.
