Your post really brought some memories back.
I'll never forget being in hospital to get my tonsils and adenoids out when I was maybe eight years old.
I was frightened most of the time, and all us little kids missed our parents,so we'd do a lot of crying.
Children's wards weren't the bright coloured and user friendly places they are now.
They were clinical and oppressive,and ruled over by a ward sister, whose word was law.
I'll never forget the bitch in our ward.
She used to give our nurses a hard time because they tried to cheer us up and be nice to us.
The sister didn't think that was efficient I guess.
All us kids were real scared when the medicine trolley would come around, because we were frightened we might get a shot.
The poor little kid in the cot next to me was always having real painful things done to him, and got maybe four shots a day.
I think he had got tetanus or something.
He was older than me,maybe ten.
Whenever they'd come and start drawing the curtains round his bed, I'd see his little face go white with fear.
I'd hear him trying to stifle his cries as they were doing things to him.
One day two nurses went to his bed with a covered tray, and drew the curtains round, but from where I was lying there was a opening, so I could see most of what was going on.
The kid was real, real scared, and the nurses were trying to prepare him for his shots.
They wanted him to pull down his pants,but he just yelled NO!
I think it was just a reaction to all the pain he'd suffered,and he just didn't want anymore.
He was yelling that he wanted his Mummy and wanted to go home!
The nurses tried to calm him, but it was no use.
He just yelled and fought and kicked.
Next thing, the ward sister is in there, and she shouts to the nurses to hold him.
It was like all in wrestling, but there were three big people and only one little boy.
The nurses were holding this poor little kid face down,and he's still yelling!
The sister told him to stop yelling, but he wouldn't and then I watched her grab at the elasticated waistband of his pyjamas and pull them right down to his knees.
Then she just started to spank his little bare bottom, really,really hard.
She just spanked and spanked and spanked him, and he's screaming now, but she just kept right on spanking,turning his little white bottom pink and then fiery red.
He was crying his eyes out now,and eventually, I guess he just ran out of steam, and just cried and whimpered like a injured puppy.
That ward sister just kept right on spanking his poor little bare bottom, until I guess she must have ran out of puff herself.
Then, while the nurses, looking like they would start crying any minute themselves, held the poor,whimpering, pitiful little thing down, that sister gave him the shots herself, as roughly and as painfully as she could in his crimson,spanked little bottom.
I'll never forget that scene.
People talk about the good old days, but I am sure glad that those sorts of good old days are gone, forever hopefully.
