It never hurt a child butt then and it will not hurt them now. I believe if you have a 7 y.o.. child or a 13 y.o . child. If you take youe7 y.o. rectal temp. then you should take your 13 y.o.temp. rectally to. so the 7 y.o. will not feal bad because the 13 y.o. got it in the butt too. Growing up Mom had three glass rectal thermometers, one for myself, my older brother and younger sister. We were all very close in age. We all had our temperatures taken rectally well into our teen years. This also held true for visits to our pediatrician. At least until 13. Our Mother just thought that it was the most accurate, and there was no argument, that’s just the way she did it. I should mention I’m in my sixties, when rectal temps were the norm. If mom even thought one of us had a fever you got called into the bed room . She would tell you that she was going to take your temperature in your bottom. She continued to do it this way until we were 11 or 12. It was the same way at the pediatricians office.I know the last time I was there I was 14 and this was the same way they took your temperature because it was the most accurate way. I was required to have a physical exam for admission to a private prep high school as a freshman and my mom took me for my exam. As we waited in the examination room, me stripped down to just my underpants, the nurse entered and took my measurements, my blood pressure and my pulse. Then I was instructed to lie down on my stomach and she lowered my underpants and inserted a rectal thermometer. I remember vividly that it seemed an eternity with her holding the thermometer in place while casually conversing with my mom. I didn’t say anything until she left but I complained to my mom as soon as she was gone, getting little sympathy but an admonition to be cooperative or risk a spanking. She spanked me over her knee so when I was small, she took my temperature rectally in that position, as well. I loved it. She would take my pants down or off then gently place me over her knee and lower my undies toy knees. After lubing the thermometer and my little hole, she would gently insert the glass stick into my rectum about an inch. Then came my favorite part of the process. She would rest her warm hand on my bottom with the thermometer between her middle and index fingers for the recommended four minutes before pulling it out slowly and replacing my clothes. A few years later, I began playing doctor with my sister and male and female friends. All my games were private so I had more freedom. It should be noted that taking a youngster's temperature rectally with a glass rectal thermometer is an exquisite means of capturing a temperature reading from him in that the opening of the rear end form a tight seal around the glass rectal thermometer and the lining of the rectal interior forms a tight bond to the surface of the three-sided glass structure from the silvery tip to the entry point (which he is sure to recognize its presence). The youngster also avoids the fatigue of keeping his mouth slightly open and lips sealed at the same time as well as having the silvery tip poking the tender underside of his tongue. Regardless, it cannot be expected that an older boy will never be receptive to and the embarrassment of having his "butt" with a "glass thermometer" like a five year old boy while at the same time (as might be the case) seeing his peers having a temperature taken in the mouth with a "glass thermometer". They seen patients from newborn to 17. And then the 70s and early 80s I can remember they only use glass thermometers I remember The nurse will call you back. Get your weight your height then She will take you into a room tell you to remove your clothes and you could leave your shirt and underwear most of the time your socks on so basically just remove your pants. She would talk to mom And write in the chart and then when you were finished undressing she would take your blood pressure and then tell you to lay on your stomach so that she could take your temperature I remember she would walk to the counter take out the thermometer shake it down walk over lower your underwear Slide the thermometer into Bottom and hold it in place for what seemed like an eternity [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
