Only got a glimpse of a news report about how a flaw in the manufacture of some electronic thermometers have resulted in inconsistent results. I've always wondered about that. Lucky for me that I have a supply of both oral and rectal glass thermometers that other moms gave to me when they switched over. I need them both because a have a 8 year old boy caring for with a learning disorder and I would not think of putting a glass oral thermometer in his mouth. He has frequent bronchitis and at times his temperature needs frequent monitoring. I am wondering that when that happens I should take the other kids temperature too. I have enough of glass oral thermometers to take all of their temperatures at one time. It sure would be a time saver. Hope that I am no overreacting about the problem with electronic thermometers.

Laura,

When a glass (mercury fill) rectal thermometer is used for taking a temperature, a five year old boy who unlike a five year old girl, is considered to have delays in a combination of intellectual and/or emotional maturity that renders him at risk of failing to keep a glass oral thermometer intake while placed in the mouth. Thus, for a five year old boy and for that matter any other youngster through the age of ten years old, regardless of gender, who who is thought to lack the capacity to responsibly manage a glass oral thermometer place in the mouth, that youngster should also be subject to having a temperature taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer. That is, nothing is required of the youngster but to remain passive while the glass rectal thermometer is securely lodged in his rear end. However, over the last couple of decades or so, there is a trend that for boys to a much greater extent than girls to fit in that category.

With that being said, it is not surprising that use of electronic thermometers that have gained wide acceptance, at least in the clinical environment and most caretakers of youngsters. For the remaining caretakers of youngster, with the lack of certainty of whether or not a youngster would would have successful outcome of having a temperature taken in the mouth with a glass oral thermometer, the caretaker would take comfort knowing that taking the youngster's temperature rectally with a glass rectal thermometer will insure a successful conclusion. There are other advantages using a glass rectal thermometer in this means of capturing a temperature reading from a youngster.
