Laura,

When a glass (mercury fill) rectal thermometer is used for taking a temperature, a five year old boy who unlike a five year old girl, is considered to have delays in a combination of intellectual and/or emotional maturity that renders him at risk of failing to keep a glass oral thermometer intake while placed in the mouth. Thus, for a five year old boy and for that matter any other youngster through the age of ten years old, regardless of gender, who who is thought to lack the capacity to responsibly manage a glass oral thermometer place in the mouth, that youngster should also be subject to having a temperature taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer. That is, nothing is required of the youngster but to remain passive while the glass rectal thermometer is securely lodged in his rear end. However, over the last couple of decades or so, there is a trend that for boys to a much greater extent than girls to fit in that category.

With that being said, it is not surprising that use of electronic thermometers that have gained wide acceptance, at least in the clinical environment and most caretakers of youngsters. For the remaining caretakers of youngster, with the lack of certainty of whether or not a youngster would would have successful outcome of having a temperature taken in the mouth with a glass oral thermometer, the caretaker would take comfort knowing that taking the youngster's temperature rectally with a glass rectal thermometer will insure a successful conclusion. There are other advantages using a glass rectal thermometer in this means of capturing a temperature reading from a youngster.
