Shelly,

How did it go with your son's second weekly enema last Sunday? Did he put up a fuss? Were you able to carry thru with your plan and again get a quart of very warm water into him? That's a lot for a 6 year-old. However, if you were able to gently get all of it into him that is a good thing, The farther the enema goes up into his rectum and colon the more effective it is at loosening the stool that is stuck up in there.

If you continue your plan (and I hope you do), this Sunday will be his third weekly enema. You will need to be very firm with him if he resists. When everything is ready in the bathroom go tell him that it is time for his enema. If he complains or cries tell him that you are sorry that this is unpleasant and uncomfortable, but it needs to be done and has to be done now. Whenever he refuses to cooperate, immediately repeat the mantra: This needs to be done and has to be done now. If you keep repeating this often enough I think he will come to understand that enemas are going to be a part of his life.

Since it appears that you are new to giving enemas, I have a couple of suggestions to offer:

If your "cheapo" Walgreens enema bag comes with a regular and a douche nozzle, I suggest that you use the douche nozzle. It is less likely to clog with feces and will help the enema go in easier. Lubricate it with vegetable shortening (such as "Crisco") rather than vaseline (vaseline often is irritating to the anus) and insert it slowly and gently as far as you can into your son's anus. Just be careful not to force it into him.

Mix a half a cap full of baby shampoo in the warm enema water. It will help the enema loosen the stuck feces and is less irritating than soap.

Make sure the enema and nozzle stay in your son's rectum long enough for the enema to be fully effective before you let him use the toilet. 10 minutes should be sufficient.

Good luck and I hope all goes well. Make sure to let your son knows how much you love him.

Shelly, bless you and him.
Lost count. Sorry. You have given him the enema three times now?

Each enema session should be easier to administer.

Sure you have, but make it as a relaxing event as possible.

Rewarding for good behavior. Letting him watch favorite show or read favorite book while getting the enema.

Growing up I got many enemas from my aunt (nurse). She used the bulb syringe to give enemas. Given on a table.

Have you tried using the bulb syringe?

Giving the enema on the bed or on a table instead of across your lap way?

Agree with you about explaining. When I gave enemas I only told the basics. Felt was no need to go into details.

Did you consider asking another mom to give the enema? A friend of mine does that. Her 5 yo b accepts getting a bulb syringe enema from her next door neighbor.

Blessings and hugs

Joyce, glad you told of making the soapy warm water enema.

My aunt made the soapy enema water in a pan. Made in the kitchen sink. Swishing a bar of Ivory soap in a pan of warm water. Not strong! Just a mild soapy water enema. Given with a bulb syringe on the kitchen table. Towel on the table.
This is how moms gave enemas in the late 50s.

I also gave the soapy water enema to mine . Then gave a Florine enema after he expelled the soapy enema.

Other moms told me they made the soapy water as you told.

Best to consult with doctor before giving enemas.

Darn spell checker!…

“Florine enema” should read “plain water enema.”
