Hi Sue & Carol A. Thanks for your comments.
I have only happy memories of my childhood encounters with the Higginson and I thought Id share some with you.
I guess you could say I 'graduated' from the bulb to the pump sometime after age 6. It was a welcome change since I didnt like multiple insertions (I think most girls dont).
I recall Mommy explaining to me how this rather strange looking object functioned shortly after she bought it and looking in awe at the black trade mark embossed on the dark red rubber "PERFEX ENEMA - WARANTED NOT TO SPLIT".
She told me she would be using it in future for all my enemas and promised it would make things a lot easier.
And so it was. If I was sick and off school I would get it in bed laying on a rubber sheet with my knees drawn up and my bottom over the edge. On other occasions she would syringe me in the bathroom down in the knee-chest position.
She would usually prepare a jug of foaming warm ivory soap suds sometimes adding a few drops of castor oil or glycerine
to the mix.
She always used her pump on me with the utmost TLC like she fully understood my thoughts and fears. My bottom would get a thorough lubing first and then I would feel the stubby black nozzle slipping between my butt cheeks and pressing gently against my anus.
For a short while nothing more happened (like she was getting me used to it) That short moment of anticipation always reminded me of waiting for a plane to take off - like y'know when its powering up on the runway...
Then she would say "Relax Dear, relax!" and it would start moving slowly forward and then rapidly UP & IN!!
That nozzle always felt warm and comfotable inside me,very smooth and correctly shaped to prevent it slipping out.
(I think kids often fear this kind of 'accident' during enemas and I found it re-assuring when she pressed my cheeks together with her one hand while she pumped with the other)
She would then tell me to take a deep breath, and as I did so I felt the first dose of warm suds goin in.
I soon realized that she wanted to get my breathing in sync with the action of the pump, which not only made my enema easier to take but me feel like I was actually helping in the whole process, rather than having it forced into me.
Things usually went very well, but if I complained of any cramping she would stop pumping and give me a gentle belly rub until my bowel had settled down and then continue.
She never gave me more volume than I could comfortably accomodate. She would then help me onto the toilet, remove the nozzle and encourage me to try and retain for as long as possible and not to force it out but "just go when you feel the urge". She would then leave me to expell in private saying I should call her if I couldnt cope.
I dont think I ever did, though I discovered on my own that deep breathing made the expulsion a lot easier.
I soon got to love that old pump and didnt want my enemas any other way. When one of Mommy's friends suggest she get a
bag for me I wouldnt hear of it!
Needless to say in later years I used the Higgy and her technique on my own kids very effectively.
I do realize that these pumps (especially good quality ones)
are hard to find except on-line nowadays.
During a trip to Toronto,I was able to buy one for my eldest daughter. She took it with her when she went off to College
and was very glad to have it for those difficult times of the month. However that was many years ago.
Bless you both. Hope to write again when I get the time.
Love Debby
