Had a real nice conversation with mom just now. She said her daughter has been in a really good mood yesterday and today. She said she has been eating like a horse so she is going to have even more stool building up daily. But she hasn't seen her this respectful of mom and talkative and happy. Mom does not say anything to her about enemas, pooping, me, and it has really cleared the whole atmosphere in the house. No tension. No walking on egg shells because daughter might blow up at her about needing a Fleet enema. She can't thank me enough and is persistent that she wants to pay me. No way, I'm just a mom who believes in maintenance enemas and someone who cares about this young gal as if she were my own. Mom is taking her clothes shopping tomorrow and her daughter is so excited! Her bill for the clean out Home Health Care provided to daughter was over $300. I told her take the money she would have to pay for her next clean out and buy her the nicest outfits that she picks out. I'm happy for her. I hope she wears one of those outfits Sunday. She is a very pretty girl. She is petite, not very tall, going to be short like her mom but she is so pretty.

Thinking about Kitten Paw. Hope you do okay taking your enema. I hope you didn't nick or cut yourself. Enjoy the new smooth feel on the toilet getting your enema out. I'm rediscovering my journey with enemas these days now too. I'm going to have an enema tonight. I role play that I am my babysitter and me the enema giver at the same time telling her she has to take the whole bag and then try to hold it in.

Shelly,

I want to share with you some information about Miralax.

I understand that sitter had a very bad experience several years ago when her mom was told to give her large doses of Metamucil and Miralax and that suggesting that to her now would likely put your relationship with her at risk. So please don't say anything to her about this at this time. Perhaps there will come a time when you and sitter are having a comfortable conversation so that you can gently share what I tell you now.

Its important to understand how Miralax works. Miralax is granular (like sugar or salt) PEG-3350 made by Bayer pharmaceuticals. Bayer makes lots of it and it is very profitable. It is used by mixing it into water, milk, fruit juice, or other beverages where the granules attach to the water. It has no significant taste. Once in the stomach it carries the water through the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed and on to the colon. If a large dose of Miralax is taken it acts like an enema often with unpredictable and embarasing results.

In my experience that is why most people think of Miralax as a laxative. However if taken in small controlled doses it can be very helpful in avoiding constipation. The beauty of it is because of its granular nature it is easy to precisely control the dose. If you start with a very small daily dose it will probably have no effect. But if you slowly increase the dose, perhaps once a week, it will reach a point where bowel movements will gradually become more frequent without embarrassing accidents.

For sitter I think she should start with one teaspoon at breakfast which is far less that the Bayer recommended dose. Increase the dose by a half a teaspoon each week. Continue the maintenance enemas and cleansing treatments until you see an increase in BM frequency between enemas. Then gradually decrease the frequency of enemas and adjust the Miralax only as necessary until you obtain the desired regularity. This may take several months. But during this time her colon may slowly return to normal size. Cleansing enemas should be continue, perhaps once a month, to keen her colon healthy.

Do your best to convince setter if she is patient and doesn't rush the adjustments she should be able to avoid the disasters of the past.

Now is probably not the time to present this to sitter. But based on the recent report from her mom she may develop a happier, healthy life from your attentions.

My best to you and sitter. Please keep me posted on your progress.

- Joyce

Joyce,

All true. The malpractice use of Miralax by Doctors is when a child presents with encopresis with no formed stools, active withholding, and bypass diarrhea. Me for example at 7 years old. There is a large mass somewhere in the child's sigmoid section of the colon that is so hard, so dried out, so large that it ain't movin'! That has got to be removed before they can work on getting the child to have formed bowel movements again. Trying go get that mass to move with Miralax orally has one fallacy. No matter the size of dose there is not enough volume of liquid to expand the colon quickly and suddenly to make that mass move. The stomach and intestines string that liquid out and delivers it along the large intestines in too small and too slow of amounts to do a quick push on that mass. A large volume series of soapy slippery and rinse enemas will have a tremendously better chance of getting the mass out. I agree Miralax has it's place in getting daily formed poops. It is not good at removing a mass in an encopric child.
