I didn't feel comfortable at all about Jesus' words in Mark 12:17 being used to promote tithing. There are plenty of OT passages which set up giving a tenth for the clear purposes of maintaining God's house (the tabernacle or temple) and paying the "clergy." Why Mark 12:17 had to be used to promote tithing I don't know.

I wish tithing could be done voluntarily and from our hearts. The words in the message sound nice, but as usual, in the practical life of UBF there's the world mission offering chart to worry about. What happens when someone's world mission offering decreases? They get a semi-circle (like a pie with a slice cut out of it) instead of a full circle on the chart. Don't deny it. I've seen it with my own eyes! Also in the practical life of UBF you also need to worry about calls from the treasury if your offering doesn't meet a certain "standard." Don't deny it. I've received such calls, even when I was just a student, working student jobs! Please also reread the Calabreses' testimony. What drove them away was largely the Lee-created hell that was the 1997 MSU preparation. The constant pressure put on leaders by Lee for more and more registrations even after all possibilities were exhausted caused them to shell out thousands of dollars to register sheep "by faith." These are the unspoken offerings that we in UBF have to make. So many leaders besides Joe Calabrese left because of this ordeal. This is probably more than you wanted to hear, but I offer it in the hopes that younger members may develop a sense of history.
