5 ply is the thinnest that Keller makes. I haven't seen too many people use them though. The 6 ply Kellers are pretty popular for toms. For snares, 10 or 8 ply are the most popular. You can take two 10 ply shells and make a 20 ply shell. That's how OCDP does it. For bass drums a lot of people use 8 ply for addes strength but if you're not mounting anything on it I think 6 ply would be fine. The only thing that I would put reinforcing rings on is a snare. A 10 ply shell with rings would give you a nice high crack.
