Hi Tammy!

Just once in my life I would like to utter the words "I am sick to death of catching Tarpon" Having tried it all I must confess that the excitement of salt water fly fishing is pretty hard to duplicate in fresh water fishing but in some cases it can be done.. Light tackle fly rodding for bass and crappie can be a lot of fun and a great diversion from the rigors of salt water flats fishing..I can offer you alot of advise in regards to the gear required to catch bass and crappie, but I have no experience with the serverity of the drought that you are experiencing there. Droughts have a tendency to consentrate the fish however servere drought can impact fisheries for years..

The gear that I would recommend would be a 7 or 8 weight rod. You will need a good wieght forward bass taper to move the large wind resistant poppers and an Orvis Sly Line to fish the lakes and ponds with wooley Buggers and leeches and such..You will find as you begin your quest that there is a whole sub-culture of bass fisherman out there.. Really, they all have this funny look on their face like they know something you don't.. Try a local fly shop or club and don't give up if the first couple don't have a clue it's not everyones thing but you should stumble into someone that is willing to share their knowledge with you. Good Luck,

Best Fishes,
Bob Searle
