Steamboat's Grave

Cheyenne - 7/25/2008

For 11 years, the outlaw horse tormented Frontier Days rough stock riders.

Now stories have swirled that the legendary horse "Steamboat" is buried in the middle of the Cheyenne Frontier Days arena.

Even Cheyenne's website says the jet black horse with three white socks is buried there... and that the horse got his name because he had a broken nose that made him snort like a steamboat.

Newschannel 5 spoke with several volunteers who have been involved with CFD... and the majority believe that the arena is Steamboat's final resting place.

But, Shirley Flynn, a Cheyenne Frontier Days historian, says "it's a great myth but a myth nonetheless." She says C.B. Irwin, who was Steamboat's owner, was a great story teller and that's where the rumor may have started. Flynn says no bones have ever been found.

But, it seems most like to think Steamboat is buried the arena watching over the "Daddy of 'Em All."

- I could walk you out there and be close to the spot. I was there the day he got killed. Trevor didn't have much luck this week there. Broke his rope in the calf roping yesterday. Maybe I am confused (I usually am) but I had thought that Steamboat had been buried somewhere in SE Missouri. Seems like he was found dead in a train car or something around Cape Girardeau. Again, I may be very confused. (NT) -- Bruce, 12:14:54 07/28/08 Mon

  - ZD... I am not sure on the chute. I can see the spot in my mind as to where I was at when it happened. Like I said, if I was there I could give you a better discription as to where.
