Travis County prosecutors said Wednesday that assault charges against former professional world champion steer wrestler Sid Steiner have been dismissed.

Steiner was indicted by a grand jury this month. He was accused of pointing a gun at another driver after a traffic accident in December 2007 near his Northwest Austin home.

The district attorney's office said in a statement that it recently received information indicating that Steiner might have been misidentified.

Prosecutors and Austin police will continue investigating the incident, officials said.

"The review of the incident will determine whether the case will be re-presented to the Grand Jury," the statement said.

Steiner's attorney, Allan Williams, said that when he first learned of the allegations, he had said that Steiner would be found not guilty.

"I am glad that this happened," Williams said. "He has suffered a lot from this accusation that was not true and is not true.

"It is hard to get your reputation back after someone has accused you of something you didn't do," he said.

Steiner is a fourth-generation rodeo performer who cultivated a bad-boy image on the rodeo circuit because he had long hair — sometimes worn in cornrows — tattoos and multiple piercings.

He was the 2002 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association steer wrestling world champion. His great-grandfather, T.C. "Buck" Steiner, has his own wing in the Rodeo Hall of Fame. He used the money that he earned riding bulls to open Capitol Saddlery on Lavaca Street in the 1930 and buy thousands of acres, including Steiner Ranch, much of which is now a subdivision
