Subject: Bad Ass Donkey Ropin' Report

I took my blushin' bride of over 45 years out to eat supper tonight. We traveled 85 miles West and went to Hamilton, Texas to dine at the 'Crossfire' restraunt. Let me assure you that it was a restraunt and not a cafe. The establishment will seat at least 75 people and is as nice as any rodeo arena restraunt I have ever been to. We were seated at a huge round table and our party consisted of 15 pepople. The feature attraction was the donkey roping that had started at 9:00am today.

The circle T arena is HUGE and has everything one would wish for in a covered arena when you consider that Hamilton is the home of only 6,500 hearty soals and the nearest town of any size is Waco, 80 miles away. The croud consisted of mostly locals and ropers and the place had plenty of activity. Everything was run well. They even had a goat ropin' concession for the kids.

In this part of the world a donkey will sell at auction for about $50.00. You pay a $25.00 commission and $25.00 for a coggins test and all you are out is your haulin' and time.

They roped donkeys from young to old, spottd, brown and black. It was a hoot. It seemed that no one could rope a donkey by the neck. You have to get your loob big enough to go arround 14" of ear and 20" of face on a donkey that runs wiht his head down after a few runs. Mot every catch as down on the donkeys chest and those things can really lay into a cowboy dallied up to one trying to get him turned and it took a big horse with a head of steam to lay in to those things and make them hop so a heeler could heel him but a lot of those guys did. A lot didn't too but you already knew that. I have never seen so many women heading for their 30something husbands/boyfriends/whatever. One of the old gals that was roping never missed a loop, always had a big smile on her face and handed her reins to her hubby at the end of each run and would return to tendin' her kids or helpin' with the goat ropin' concession. This ol' gal was the most pleasant looking person you would ever want to see but she was no beauty queen material. She would have the same measurements top to bottom were it not for a bike inner tube spare tire she sported while mounted. I never saw her in the 5 hours we were there that she was not smiling and doing something useful.

Another thing that impressed me was that you have to use a big loop to rope a donkey. I expected the donkeys to fight or kick a bit. Not many did. The chute sour ones would set up a bit and try to turn back into the box but these guys told the ropers if the had one and the roper would just wait and when the donkey saw the box was occupied he would take off. From what I saw a donkey can't out run a horse but they dang sure can do a canter depart better than a horse when they want to. When a roper wold panty hose one the donkeys would buck and kick a little. Donkeys seem to be a bit smarter than a longhorn. They have their mind made up where safety is and they want to get there even after they are roped. The quality of the roping was excellent. We saw some 6 second runs and about 1/3 of the ropers would get a no time and about the same would get a penilty.

We enjoyed the deal and it was nice to know that the guys that could rope went home with the money and everyone had a good time.

Neat deal and ropin' a $50.00 donkey sure seems like more sport to me than ropiin' a $350.00 steer.
