Thanks for providing this forum.
I have heard and read (without proper evidence) that wearing black was sunna (for muslimahs). Can you provide this evidence or is it cultural tradition and thus bid'a?

A statement was also raised that the (tarwrith) nightly prayers during Ramadan were not done the same way in the Prophet's time, how was it performed and was the Quran broken down into 30 parts also?

There has been 2 sources of evidence that I have come across in hadiths one supporting females unbraiding and one supporting leaving them in their hair when making ghusl after menses. I realize that the scalp is what is important here for cleanliness. Can you give your opinion as to which is the preferred method for making ghusl?

Jazak Allah kharyn

As Saalamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

As Muslims we have been instructed by the Prophet(saw) to avoid speaking without knowledge and to avoid people who speak without knowledge. To speak without knowledge means to say things about this religion of which you have no evidence of... so therefore, if someone tells you that wearing black is sunnah for women or that women can not wear any other color other than black, then they should be able to supply you with the sahih evidence to prove it. If they can not, then they are a person who speaks without knowledge and again, we have been instructed to avoid these types of people.

The prophet's wives and daughters, and the women of the sahabah wore clothes of colors:

Narrated Anas bin Malik that he had seen Um Kulthum, the daughter of Allah's Apostle , wearing a red silk garment.
(Bukhari 7.733)

Narrated Um Khalid (the daughter of Khalid bin Said) I went to Allah's Apostle with my father and I was wearing a yellow shirt. Allah's Apostle said, "Sanah, Sanah!" (Abdullah, the narrator, said that 'Sanah' meant "good" in the Ethiopian language). I then started playing with the seal of Prophethood (in between the Prophet's shoulders) and my father rebuked me harshly for that. Allah's Apostle said. "Leave her," and then Allah's Apostle (invoked Allah to grant me a long life) by saying (thrice), "Wear this dress till it is worn out and then wear it till it is worn out, and then wear it till it is worn out." (The narrator adds, "It is said that she lived for a long period, wearing that (yellow) dress till its color became dark because of long wear.") (Bukhari 4.305)

There is no evidence of any sahih hadith that states the prophet(saw) said black is a sunnah, and as you can see from just these 2 hadiths, the prophet(saw) did not tell the women that anything was wrong with them wearing clothes of colors.

In regards to a woman having her hair in braids and taking a bath, that is a choise she makes. Ghusl means to wash all body parts and this includes the head. The prophet(saw) would wash his head by pouring water over it. The same applies to a woman. As long as you pour water over your head it doesnt matter if you have braids or not. The act of pouring water over your head washes that body part.

This is the Ghusl of the prophet(saw) and the way that anyone who wants to follow his sunnah should perform it, regardless of being male or female:

Narrated Aisha, "When the Prophet, upon whom be peace, took his bath after sexual intercourse, he would begin by
washing his hands. Then he would pour water from his right
hand to his left and wash his sexual organs, make the
ablution for prayer, take some water and put his fingers to
the roots of his hair to the extent that he sees that the
skin is wet, then pour water over his head three times and
then over the rest of his body." (Related by al-Bukhari and
Muslim.)

In one narration it states, "He used to rub his head with
his hands until he was certain the water reached his skin,
and then he poured water over it three times." It is also
related that she said, "When the Prophet would perform
ghusl after having had sexual intercourse, he would call
for some water, which he would pour on his right hand to
wash the right side of his head and then the left. He would
then take water with both hands and pour it over his head."
Said Maimunah, "I put water out for the Messenger of Allah
to perform ghusl. He washed his hands two or three times,
and then he poured water from his right hand to his left
and washed his private parts, wiped his hands on the earth,
rinsed his mouth and nose, washed his face and hands,
washed his head three times, poured water over his body,
and finally moved from his place and washed his feet. I
brought him a towel, but he did not take it, for he shook
the water off with his hands." [Related by "the group."]

Finally, in regards to Qiyam during Ramadhan during the time of the Prophet(saw), the prophet(saw) did not pray Qiyam in congregation on a regular basis during the month of Ramadhan because he did not want the peopel to think it was obligatory.
