As Salaamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

The Prophet(saw) said the best generation of Muslims were the first 3 generations of Muslim whom were comprised of his Sahabah and offspring. Every other generation of Muslims becomes worse and worse.

The Prophet(saw) has also told us that this nation will split into sects and all sects will be in the hellfire except those who remain on the path of him and his sahabah:

�The Jews and the Christians split into seventy-two sects, all of which are in Hell; this ummah [nation] will split into seventy-three sects, all of which will be in Hell apart from one.� They asked, �Which one is that, O Messenger of Allaah?� He said, �Those who follow the path which I and my Companions are on today.� He said, �A group of my ummah will remain following the truth and will prevail, and those who oppose them will not harm them, until the Day of Judgement begins.� [Bukhari]

So from this we can surmise that what is meant is for the Muslim to stick with the Quran and Sunnah and adhere to them as his Sahabah did whom were the best of all Muslims, and by doing so, you will remain on the path of righteousness.
