As the humanities assistant at CHC, I produce posters and programs for events like the spring musical. I've been struggling a lot with learning design principles in the last couple of years. Because we don't have the money to do 4-color printing, I've learned somewhat how to balance using mass and values, even if those are different blocks of text in different sizes and fonts.
But balance with color really interests me. A good example of an artist who did that is James Whistler. His painting,
"Whistler's Mother" is actually titled "Arrangement in Grey and Black." The entire painting is balanced by grey, black, and white shapes. See http://aaronartprints.com/whistler.html.
A web page that is a good example of asymmetrical design, contrasting shapes, and color balance is Penn's: http://upenn.edu. It uses the 3 primary colors (red, blue, and yellow)plus white on a dark blue ground. There's a large graphic of Ben Franklin on the left, a small oval photograph in the center, and a rectangular column of white text on the right. It sounds busy but it works.
