Subject: Uh oh, Ed's thinkin' again...

My progress with the IMA way has been coming along pretty well with the exception of my long irons and woods. I have a lot of confidence with the pitching wedge down to the five iron but below that it's slice city.

Dutifully, I position the ball in the center of my body for the pitching wedge and inch it forward so that by the time I get to the five iron it is at my left pectoral muscle (I'm right handed).
For the four iron I position the ball at little in front of where I did for the five iron and inch it forward so that by the time I get to the driver it is at my front foot.

Here's my theory on what is happening to me:
I think I keep the club on the right path until about the center of my body (bottom of the arc) and then the ole (actually old) hips get involved which causes me to pull away from the ball hence the slice on the lower clubs only.

Questions:

1) Do you think that is what is probably happening?
2) If my theory is right it seems like I might do well to position the ball in the center of my stance regardless of the club I'm using .
Why do I need to change the ball position for different clubs? It seems like I've heard you want to be swinging down on the ball with short irons and up on it with the woods. But why? Except for maybe specialty shots, shouldn't the different club lofts take care of things without having to do that?

Of course the other option is to work on keeping my hips quiet longer, but that's easier said than done. Old habits are hard to break, as they say.

Thanks,
Phys Ed
