Subject: Home For Aged Footballers

Due to the ongoing Walter Smith policy of falling out with and then selling any promising player under the age of 30 (Dunne, Ball, Jeffers, Jevons, McCann, Gravesen & Myhre to name but a few) Everton Football Club are proud to announce their intention to provide those players "well past their sell-by date" with a place to rest and take it easy.

Within the wide open green spaces of Goodison Park, past internationals of a variety of countries will be allowed to 'play' at their leisure whilst younger, fitter and keener opposition make more effective use of the ball.

Tommy Hutchison is being eyed, I hear, and Calton Palmer has also been mentioned. However, it will be the introduction of the bronze statue of Dixie Dean as a half time substitute which will no doubt steal the headlines soon .....

First Division here we come ..........

>This presumably explains why the average age of the side that shouldn't have got beat on Sunday was 27, which is about the same as most premier league teams.

As to the 'past-it' player philosophy, it didn't do us any harm with the likes of Gough and Gascoigne, and Ginola was the only one who looked like scoring on Sunday. And for every 'oldie', there's also the likes of Linderoth, Caesley and Blomqvist.

I agree about selling the kids. I guess we could start playing Wayne Rooney now, let him score a few goals, and then sell him for a few mill on his 17th birthday ! In retrospect, however, selling Jeffers, ball and Barbmy looks like good business. How many games have the three of them played in total ?!

AAnyway, let's not wash our dirty laundry in public - there may be some Kopites accessing this Message Board who have found somebody to read it out to them !!!

Ball, Jeffers and now Gravesen didn't WANT to play for the team so good riddance. 8-10m for Jeffers looks like good money considering he spends more time on the treatment table than on the pitch. As for Dunne - did you really think he was a good player? Jevons has some promise but if was going to be a star then surely a Premiership team would have bought him. McCann has had all his best games for Sunderland not for EFC. As for first division football next season I think it's just a little soon to be playing the death march. Walters biggest failing is in his tactical knowledge of the game. Playing Blomqvist on the right just doesn't make sense to me. The thing we really need is a fit mobile centre forward ( with pace )who can feed of the quality crosses that Ginola and Blomqvist can supply and who can be purchased for a half eaten bag of toffees....

Fair play to you both, lads. Some good points well made.

What really gets me down, putting Walter's bizarre tactics and teams selections to one side for a minute, is that in 30 years of going to the match I can not recollect so many players expressing their desire to leave Goodison. Coincidence? Not likely.

We have a reserve team who won their Premier league title last year, mainly by using the kids given the level of injuries we had to 'senior' players, and how many of those have been given their chance? Admittedly Hibbert has played a few games lately, Clarke a couple and Chadwick has had the odd 20 minutes.

We just seem to be playing for today and not building for the future, perhaps partly down to fincancial constraints but surely not totally down to it.

Anyway, I think I have whinged enough and feel a bit better now. I'm off for a lie down.
