On March 20, 2003 my elderly female cat was apparently attacked by an owl in our backyard in Encinitas, California. She sustained over 20 severe lacerations and puncture wounds between her shoulder blades and on her neck. The emergency vet felt confident of the diagnosis because she had just had another cat in for treatment who's owner saw it happen. In addition, my cat's regular vet recently treated a chihuahua for puncture wounds around the rib cage, presumably from owl talons. It seems to be a growing problem with no solution because of the mass clearing of open land for construction of new homes in this county. "Mystery" would be very unhappy being locked inside. She has enjoyed the outdoors her whole life, including encounters with raccoons, skunks, opossum and of course, other cats but I have never been so frightened for her. Thank you for providing a place for me to share my experience. Rita
