I think he let his ego take control a little bit too much. When you go through writers--and loose good ones due to "politics" or whatever it's called, I think you loose sight of any sort of quality for your conclusion and have to simply punt to get to the end. You also loose track of the details of any story line you might be trying to develop. Consistency in a story line needs to have all the players involved throughout. It's sort of what happens to sports teams when a star player is out of the game--sometimes people can pick up the pieces and move on, but most of the time the quality level is just not quite the same.

I think he used the 9 years to write an end--I don't think he really had any actual story line firmly in place. It just seemed to me that this is what evolved from the series and would answer questions that any good mystery or sci-fi story can generate.
