Hi David,

When Paul says we are not under law but grace he is not dismissing all law. Just prior to Rom.6 he tells that there is a law of faith (Rom.3:27). He then says that if there is no law then there is no sin (transgression = sin = missing the mark). John says the same thing when he says that sin is lawlessness (1 John 3:4). If there is no law, then there is no sin - period! Moreover, in Romans 8:1 Paul says, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus." But who are those in Christ Jesus? Verse 2 tells us, "Who do not walk according flesh but according to the spirit." What does this mean? Verse 3 tells us, "For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death." Paul is comparing the Old Covenant with the New Covenant - the old law and the new law - the law of Moses and the law of the spirit in Christ. Paul basically says the same thing in 2 Corinthians 3. He is comparing the old cov. w/ the new cov. The whole first portion of Romans is explaining how the gentiles are no better than the Jews and that the Jews are no better than the gentiles. The old law was for the Jew but the gentiles (Abraham), who lived before the law, lived by faith - the law of faith. Now both Jew and Gentile can live by faith and be one under this new covenant as well - the law of Christ. Furthermore, the Hebrews writer quotes Jeremiah who tells us that God would write His LAWS on minds and hearts. Did this prophecy come true or did it fail? I vote for # 1 and so would you, I think. Now notice he says that this law would not be according to the old law he made with their fathers (Heb.8:9), that is, it would be different, BUT it still would be law nonetheless. Whatever God tells us to do or not to do is LAW, whether it be in the Old or the New, whether it be on tablets of stone or on hearts and minds. Either way, it is law!
