Used to head out that way when I was studying in Sheffield.
More to the point... the more I think about it the more I agree with WelshExile. I think Howells' experience and reputation as a coach possibly make him the pick of the alleged applicants. He's certainly the pick of the known appplicants, being the only one.
While I have been of the opinion that Smithy needed to move on for some time my big worry was that we would struggle to find someone able to take things forward - I no longer have that concern knowing his hat is in the ring.

Just to clarify that I think it unlikely I am about to be awarded a job I have not applied for.

Good luck with the recruitment and there are some fantastic names associated with the role. Hope you get your man and best of look next season. I will be rooting for you guys to finish top 8 this year.

Very generous and sporting of you to say all that, Rusty. Best of luck in Nat 1 next season. We'll be short of a local derby or two in the next few seasons unless Cov and Bees can climb back up again (not at our expense), shame it can only be one at a time.

I have read of the various names put forward for the next moseley coach and amongst them the one name I would certainly NOT support would be that of Maynard. No thank you, never in a month of Sundays. In my view he is too full of his own importance to the rugby fraternity. In all honesty I know nowt about Lynn Howells other than the fact that he has kept Doncaster to be at least a thorn in the side of many clubs within our league - although Moseley haven't done too bad against Donny of late. None-the-less, there will no doubt be a procedure to adhere to. The least I would profer at this stage is twofold; first, that the new coach WILL instill in the team the funermental ability to defend at all times. When I played I was never, ever an attacking player but I certainly knew how to put them down ( that came from my schoolday league coaching ) and secondly, whenever Moseley are camped on the opposition line they must learn to read the defence, remain calm and collected and constantly change the point of impact to the maximise the advantage. As we were tort in rugby league, tha dunt ger backads, eva, tha ownly goes forad, orlus and keep old of t ball sithee. Come on Moooooooooooooooooooose.

One thing i hope the board insists a new coach does is spot talent in our u16s /17s and Colts and keep hold of them , instead of them dissapearing to Worcs , and involve them with the seniors . Mose provide the bulk of Gtr Bham sides , plenty of North Mids players , Midlands etc yet not enough end up in the first team , leaving us to end up paying merceneries , or players here for a time until something better comes along ! .

Jonnoisgod- whilst i agree with your basic sentiment about retaining young players that have come through the system your arguement fails on a number of points...

Firstly if a player is good enough why would you want to stop him from moving on? If an oppurtunity opens up at a Premiership club (and for the avoidance of doubt i am classing Worcester in that mould- although clearly not based on yesterdays performance)then we should say good luck!! We dont have the resources to manage (succesfully) that player.

Secondly for years Moseley have plundered local clubs for players, i dont hear anyone on these boards saying its an outrage we have taken them from these clubs..i can assure you the clubs go best of luck!!

Thirdly how many players are actually good enough? Callum is the only own" player currently "home grown" you could claim Pons but he had to go to Coventry to play, we did not exactly manage that very well!!

So whilst i agree yes we would like to see more "home grown" players the reality is that the good ones will fly the nest.....

Well, some of what you say may be correct Eoin. And certainly everyone involved at Mose enjoys seeing ‘their own’ youngsters come through.

However, ‘plundering’ local clubs can hardly be an accusation levelled at Mose in the last decade. Who exactly have we ‘plundered’ this century?

I’d say the opposite has happened as the likes of Bournville have plundered a dozen or so who could well have helped move Moseley Oak forward sooner than achieved.

Oak, under the coaching lead of John White and the graft of the last 3 or so years , has make remarkable progress considering the above. The majority of the Oak team that won promotion this season are home grown and a number capable of forcing their way into contention for a 1st XV squad berth either next or in a near future season.

On the subject of ‘home grown’, in addition to Callum that label can also be applied to the following 1st XV squad players:
Adam Caves, Ollie Thomas, Ben & Jack Pons – all started at the club as Minis and progressed through every age group.

How can that not be classed as home grown? Ben had one season away (in about 15!), Adam & Ollie (1 or 2 in 20?!).

Add Neil Mason, Mark Evans, Richard Stott and other long serving players must qualify as ‘home grown’ by dint of either coming through Colts or doing 10 years+ service to the club. Gareth can’t be far off 10 years as well............

I don’t think your argument doesn’t really hold water. Happy to be corrected...........

Observer I take on board your points. It would be fair to say we have not produced or developed any players for a while that are now playing first team. I dont believe we should be producing players for Worcester, Bourneville for that matter.

All I was trying to say is that we need to move on and stop moaning when a player goes to a big club.

Pons is home grown but we didn't manage him well did we? If went to Coventry a any and came back a man.

We are in a professional business as you have so rightly pointed out who have we brought through recently! Where do our players come from? Moseley is not everyones first club.

Don't quite follow you Eoin.

I listed half a dozen in the previous post that have come through to 1st team from within the club. There's also a list that have been developed at the club and moved on in v recent seasons:

Magners - Muldowney & Wilson
England 7s - Rodwell & Norton
Aviva Premiership - numerous Glos Academy such as Sharples etc

Other recent Colts have been plying their trade in the National Leagues due to location (the late Sam Yearwood at Bournmouth Nat 3SW) or Matt Tibbatts (at Cov due to an outstanding backrow at Mose last season).

While I can't imagine anyone would disagree with the fundamental point of Jonnoisgod's post the reality, as Eoin points out, is that promosing young players will be drawn to the highest level they can manage. Moseley cannot compete with the facilities, staffing and financial packages on offer at Prem clubs with their RFU funded academies. I don't think there's been any lack of desire or indeed attempt to keep hold of the more promising younsgters but the fact is the club cannot offer them what a Premiership academy does.
