i seem to remember trying to defend oasis to ed last night but saying 'yknowwhatimean' every 2 seconds and swearing too much for it to have made much sense so I'll try and put my point more constructively.

the main argument against oasis is that they rip off the beatles - well, that's true - but don't we all rip people off? you rip off Idlewild and some track off incesticide in 'alone...' and there must be more that i ain't heard. We rip people off - we've blatantly nicked from several sources like oasis, stone roses, beatles and all that, so it's not like it's an original crime, let's face it it's virtually impossible for what you're listening to to not come out in what you write however experimental.

I like Oasis, they ain't me favourite band but they're probably in me top 5 bands of all time, I remember when I first heard Definitely Maybe for the first time proper - like listened to all of it all the way thru and it just made sense and it clicked, it's got that summat, Noel's a great songwriter and not everything he writes is ripped-off - just go and listen to some b-sides like 'take me away', 'd'yer wanna be a spaceman?', 'listen up' and 'fade away' they're all just great songs, there's no other agenda apart from writing a great song, for some people that might not be enough and I like things to have more than that as well but you can have everything else in the world in a song and make it about this and that and have hidden messages and every innovative and orginal thing going on but if the tune's shit then it's still no good is it? i remember someone slagging off a 911 single and everyone leaping to it's defence cos it was about the writer's struggle with cancer, which is very sad i know and the sentiment is fine but if the tune was shit then it's no good is it? my point is that however straight ahead and narrow-minded they may be - they still do great songs and that's what you want at the end of the day - you're not going to like a song just cos it's got a fuzzy spoon solo on it are ya? if it's a good solo then fair enough but dyerseewhatimgettinat?
they're real ent they - for all the bullshit in the tabloids and that - noel talks a lot of sense, and i do think liams got a great voice it's that sorta nihilistic sneer, like johnny rotten.
i ain't saying everything they've done's great - you gotta take some of the stuff off be here now and morning glory's only average except for about 3 or 4 songs (if that) and there's the odd duff b-side (idler's dream for one) but when they do good tunes they do good tunes, wicked tunes, brilliant timeless shit and that's why i like them. the tunes.
if you ever doubt that they're incapable of variating from their one theme just hear 'let's all make believe' and 'gas panic' and you'll see

you was sayin you wanted some kinda debate on here, here you are.
