hi Eye, Tis hard to know from your brief description what plant you refer too but it is likely to be Hylocereus undatus. This plant is very common here in S E Qld. It is a 3-angled-stem, climbing, cactus that may become huge. It is bat pollinated in its native Americas. The flowers are therefore nocturnal, large and white - very attractive. It is often used as a stock for grafted cacti.
It however belongs in the group (sometimes sub-family) that contains the terrestrial (non-opuntia) group species). That is it does not belong in the group of cacti that contains the true epiphytes such as Epiphyllum, Rhipsalis, Schlumbergera etc.
The third group contains the opuntia types.
