According to Truman Capote (In Cold Blood) the river is pronounced Ar-Kansas.

And there is a Springfield in nearly every state -- Pittsfield is also popular as is Marion though sometimes it is spelled Merion.

In Illinois (Ill-In-Oy) we received weather reports from the radar facility in Marseilles (Mar-SAILS), and gawked at the population of white squirrels in Verseilles (Ver-SAILS), and passed through Cairo (KAY-ro) on our way to Memphis which is in Tennessee (but don't go there unless your coefficient of inbreeding is greater than 0.7).

Here in Pennsylvania we have Dubois (DEW-boyz) and the county seat of Centre County is in Bellefonte (BELL-font). Take highway 322 and you will come to Lewistown and Mifflintown. Take Highway 45 and the names are Mifflinburg and Lewisburg. Mifflinville is further East along I-80 and Mifflin is across the Juniata (JUNE-ee-at-uh) River from Mifflintown while West Mifflin is entirely across the state near Pittsburg (where a young General George Washington was defeated at Fort Necessity in a skirmish which took place before the Seven Years War).

And when Jose went to the baseball game he was very pleased when all the people were so concerned about whether or not he had a good seat because they all stood up and asked "Jose, can you see...".
