I have trouble believing that Spike would get to be the hero in a season that the producers of the show have explicity said is more focused on Buffy than any previous season before it.

It also would break with the Buffy tradition that -- while she has support from her friends -- in the end, she has to face the consequences of the season alone.

1. Showdown with the Master
2. Sends Angel to hell dimension
3. Leads Mayor!Snake into library to be blown up
4. Goes Matrix and destroys Adam's power source
5. Jumps into the dimensional portal to close it

Now, if Spike were standing shoulder to shoulder with Buffy at the end, it may be symbolic that she no longer has to face things alone. And would harken back to what he told her in B2 and "Smashed" -- that he was all she's got. But I'm not sure they'd give him even that big of a role to play.

Buffy's show. Buffy's journey.

In "Amends," the First Evil (whom we never heard from again) claimed credit. But we don't know if that was true or a lie as part of the plan to drive Angel into despair and kill himself.
