It's not the redemptionistic way but lately I've started doubting that ME would go there anyway. I think ME's opinion is that Spike has to undergo some distinct changes to be worthy for Buffy, the hero.

Seems to be quite imprudent to agree to such terms not knowing what challenges are to be faced. Spike being too confident and impatient getting more than only the chip-ectomy would fit perfectly and seems to be a possible ME MO. Similar to the changes caused by a wish granted, you get exactly what you wanted but with uncalculated side-effects.
No one knows... but I'd like to see something like that.
Finally a Spike story-line of his own.
