Subject: nostalgia question

What's the earliest any of you have heard of for using metal detectors to find nuggets, in their natural state? A buddy of mine was in the first wave of people, to discover VLF all-metal could be used to do this. That was in the late 1970s, and they were using 6000D's. But he'd heard some earlier guys had managed to use old TR machines, like the 77B, to get nuggets too. Unless the nugget was real big, and the soil very kind, that seems like a stretch. Those old TRs would scream near mineralized ground, which, unfortunately, is usually where gold naturally occurs. So what's the early evolution of using detectors, to find nuggets?
