You're right about the Old Tr.s and BFO.s however you could locate the minerized areas along a streambed where the heavies settled using these types as the minerals usually soaked up the threshold, but then you had a spot to use your dredge, I think the Fisher 441, the Whites CM5 and the Garrett Deepseekers were the beginnings of the VLFs use. The Aussies used the Deepseekers, the RB/7 SPD, the C scopes, the 6000 D.s and an Aussie made unit called the Fortune 8000. A good friend of mine wrote the Operating manual for the First Fisher, made for gold detector, he did a good job and managed to inject a little humor too, from a users point of wiew, in what I like to call the first book written on nugget hunting. Hope this helps a little and I know Jim and the others will have something good to say on this subject...Geo
