Hi Rob,

Yeah, the Infiniums discrimination capability has been overstated regarding nugget detecting. I've been reporting as much since June, so this is hardly news.

While it's a useful feature, it's hardly 100% accurate. Anyone that relies on it may miss gold. That's true of VLF iron id, and even more true of PI iron id.

The only 100% reliable method while nugget detecting is to dig it all.

The owners manual for the Infinium clearly states that when nugget detecting it is a good idea to dig all signals. The Infinium is also intended for beach, underwater, and relic detecting. General advertising statements regarding it's discrimination capabilities do not refer directly to the discrimination circuit applicability for nugget detecting. All the statements and claims regarding the discrimination system effectiveness while nugget detecting were not made by Garrett, but by their Australian representative.

But I do agree that the hype is just that... hype. I'm sure glad Minelab does not hype their products. Otherwise I'd be wondering why the the nugget I hit with my VLF detector at 12" can't be hit by a Minelab at 36"-48"!

The iron id on PI sytems is crude, but that does not mean an experienced operator cannot use it to good effect. The bottom line, however, is that using any discrimination while nugget hunting is a judgement call, and the risk of rejecting gold nuggets exists. Sounds like your friend got caught!

I personally put no faith in ad claims or owners manuals on this particular subject. My advice is simple if you are considering the use of an iron id system while nugget detecting.

Get the signal. Make your prediction. Now dig it. Do this for days, if not weeks, before actually putting what you have learned to use. If you are able to make an accurate prediction 100% of the time, I'd say use that id system! Anything less than that... it's your call.

So how big was the nugget?
