Subject: Nugget Hunting with Discrimination Machines

Most of us have the engrained belief that nugget hunting with a discriminating metal detector in discrimination mode is a cardinal sin.

Is the new Shadow X-5 about to change the way we "do business" ?

Doing some bench tests last night, I was getting a good 4 to 5 inches on a 1.3 grain nugget in the DISCRIMINATION mode set at full sensitivity and just above the iron range in the disc setting. What surprised me was the fact that the target signal was much stronger in disc. than in the all-metal mode, with little if any difference in range. But knowing that the ground conditions will play a large part in what the disc mode will accomplish, I went through the range of gain settings to get some idea of what to expect from that end. So far, the X-5 seems to be one of the very few machines I've used where you can turn the sensitivity down considerably without the usual loss of target range. This may be a good sign of things to come as far as nugget hunting in the disc mode.

More testing to do, and I'll keep everyone posted along the way. So far, the X-5 is proving to be a killer little machine, with some definate improvements over the earlier prototype used.
